The Faculty Association of Simon Fraser University (SFUFA) seeks a:

Membership Services Officer (MSO)

 

The SFU Faculty Association seeks a Membership Services Officer to provide professional advocacy, research and other services to the Association and its members. SFUFA is a professional organization representing approximately 1000 faculty members, librarians and academic staffpersons at Simon Fraser University.

 

Reporting to the Executive Director, the MSO provides advice and representation to members of the Faculty Association regarding their employment relationships; research and professional support to the Executive and Executive Director; and other related duties as assigned. The position requires a high degree of confidentiality, and a broad set of skills related to research and advocacy in an academic labour relations environment.

 

The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills and will work well both independently and as part of a small team. Advocacy and conflict resolution skills, experience in research and communications, experience working in a small non-profit organization and the ability to manage a varied workload and familiarity with post-secondary institutions are requirements of the position. A graduate degree, direct experience with a trade union or professional association, and knowledge of SFU are assets.

 

The position will appeal to someone who enjoys a variety of tasks, takes initiative, and exhibits wide‐ranging skills in the following areas, among others:

 

• providing information and assistance to members regarding issues such as tenure and promotion, academic freedom and terms and conditions of employment generally;

• representing members in both informal and formal processes to resolve complaints and working with the Executive Director and legal counsel to process grievances and advance the interests of the Association;

• conducting research related to collective bargaining and other matters;

• conducting educational workshops for members.

 

Salary: Will be based on experience. Candidates are asked to state salary expectations

Start Date: No later than September 1, 2013

Probation: There will be an eight‐month probationary period.
