2020 Executive Elections

Dear SFUFA members:

The Faculty Association’s election/ ratification process for the 2020-2021 academic year is now complete.

Ratified for terms beginning Sept 1 are:

Sherryl Bisgrove (Biology) – Director, Human Rights and Equity
Janice Regan (Computing Science) – Director, Community Engagement

Elected Director, Teaching Appointments, is Rochelle Tucker (FHS)

With her election to the Teaching Appts position, Rochelle vacates an existing Director position, so while two of these were originally open, a third is now vacant. Under our bylaws, where a position is made vacant, the Executive may appoint someone to serve. Given that there were three candidates for Director, the SFUFA Executive has appointed the third-ranked candidate to fill the remaining vacancy.

Additional Directors for this term, then, are:

David Hannah (Beedie)
Dan Laitsch (Education)
Steeve Mongrain (Economics)

Continuing members of the Executive are:

Mike Sjoerdsma (Engineering) – President
Kumari Beck (Eduction) – Vice President
Suzanne Norman (Publishing) – Director
Alexandra Wieland (Archives) – Director, Librarians and Archivists)

Leaving the Executive is Genevieve Fuji-Johnson (Political Science).

Thanks to all who put their names forward for election, and a very special thank you to Genevieve for her service.

Dear SFUFA Members:

While we all await further developments with respect to COVID-19, the SFU Faculty Association will proceed to conduct as much regular business as possible. The status of our upcoming AGM (April 20th) is uncertain, but we will proceed with our process for Executive elections, which can be handled entirely electronically.

The Faculty Association is seeking nominations for the 2020-21 SFUFA Executive Committee. Terms begin on September 1, 2020 and run for two years. As a member-driven and volunteer-led organization, we depend on you and your colleagues to lead the organization and identify its priorities.

SFUFA serves as bargaining agent for faculty and librarians at SFU, but its work goes much further, including day to day advising and representation of members, regular and ongoing consultation with the University administration, and working in partnership with other faculty associations across the province and across the country.

Members of the Faculty Association Executive attend two meetings per month, both of which occur on Thursday morning, usually beginning at 9:30 and running to noon (a few meetings per year may run 10:30-1:00 with lunch included). Each month, one of those meetings includes a consultation with SFU’s senior administration. Further involvement is voluntary and dependent on an individual’s interest and availability. All service for SFUFA is considered University service for purposes of salary review, tenure and promotion.

Nominations are open for the following 5 positions:

  • 1 Director, Teaching Appointments for a 2-year year. Candidates must hold an appointment as a Teaching Faculty member.
  • 1 Director, Community Engagement – this requires attendance at a number of meetings (BoG, Senate, Health and Safety), and includes one teaching release per year
  • 1 Director, Equity and Human Rights – this position requires one to Chair the Association’s Equity and Human Rights Cmte, and includes one teaching release per year
  • Two Directors who are members-at-large of the Executive

A scanned doc or docx copy of the form may be sent by email to either of:
